Shannon Smith is a recent graduate of the Oklahoma Film & TV Academy Set Ready Course. In addition to her many years of experience as an actor on-set, Smith is now working behind-the-scenes with specialized experience and assistance in the production office, craft services and COVID compliance. Smith has worked on several recent projects, including the film “Finding Carlos”, “Killer Infatuation” and “Deadly Dormitory”.
What is your current and/or preferred job position and department on-set?
I am working as a production assistant, producer’s assistant, craft services, and am studying to be a script supervisor.
Did you have any formal education or training related to the industry before starting?
I was a theatre major before my husband joined the military. I also take classes and workshops whenever possible. I took the Film 101 class at the Oklahoma Film & TV Academy. It taught me set etiquette and what everyone’s job on set was.
What are some of your most recent successes (credits or accolades) related to your career in the industry?
I acted in “Infamous” with Bella Thorne and “All Roads to Pearla”, which both came out this year. Another movie I acted in, “What Josiah Saw” with Nick Stahl, is scheduled to be released in 2021. I just finished up my second film behind-the-scenes. My first movie behind-the-scenes was “Killer Infatuation”. I was a PA assigned to craft services. The second film I just finished being an Office PA/Producer’s Assistant on “Deadly Dormitory”.
What has your career in the state’s film industry taught you?
It has taught me that I can live my dream where I am. When I was younger, that never seemed possible!
What is your favorite aspect of working in Oklahoma’s film and television industry?
It really feels like a family. I don’t know if I would feel this way in a larger market, but it is one of the things that makes staying here in Oklahoma a priority to me.
What’s the best piece of advice you have for someone starting their career in Oklahoma’s film industry?
Ask questions. Learn as much as you can and keep learning. Stay humble and friendly!
Are there any local film organizations, resources or events that have been beneficial to you in your career?
Any event put on by OF+MO has been awesome in getting me information and connections. Also, deadCenter Film Festival and the many other festivals in our state are great for networking!
What’s the one item you can’t live without on-set, and why?
My cell phone. I use it to stay in contact with production (when working as crew). I use it to record my auditions. It is always close by me.
Would your career be impacted without the state’s film incentive program? If so, how?
I would not have had the opportunity to work the projects I have worked. Every project I have been on has filmed here because of the incentive.
Where do you see yourself and Oklahoma’s film industry in the next five years?
Hopefully very busy! 😉
What are you working on now or next?
I have auditioned for 4 films scheduled to film in January 2021 and may be picked up as craft services for a film starting in January also.
