Shane Brown has been working in Oklahoma’s film industry since 2005. He is a photographer and cinematographer, occasionally working as a location scout and manager. Brown was Director of Photography for “Mekko”, Director Sterlin Harjo’s latest narrative feature film, as well as a cinematographer for Harjo’s documentary film “This May Be the Last Time”. Brown has also contributed lens work to a few of Director Bradley Beesley’s documentary films. He regularly provides camera work for the Emmy Award-winning show “Osiyo—Voices of the Cherokee People”, as well as many other commercial and documentary productions and was instrumental in location scouting for Terrence Malick’s film “To the Wonder”.
“What I love about working in the film industry in Oklahoma is that it is never boring. Each gig is a new adventure. Even if it’s an adventure I’ve been on before, it’s always exciting to work in such diverse places, with interesting characters, and so many talented Oklahoma-born and based filmmakers. Then, of course, there is the thrill of seeing a project come to fruition and wind up on screen. None of it ever gets old.”
Brown’s clients include Roadside Media, “The New York Times”, FireThief Productions, Redbud Pictures, and Global Coordinating Group in accordance with the United Nations World Conference for Indigenous Peoples. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Oklahoma, a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Oklahoma State University, and an Associate in Applied Science of Photography Technology from Oklahoma State Institute of Technology. Brown’s photographs are in permanent collections, including the Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank, Oklahoma State Art Collection and the Great Plains Art Museum. He has taught as Visiting Assistant Professor of Photography at Hendrix College in Conway, AR and Adjunct Professor of Photography at the University of Tulsa and OSU Institute of Technology.
Brown continually pursues personal creative projects in documentary, fine art, and experimental film and photography. These projects include “Document for an Anonymous Indian”, an experimental film currently in production, and “In the Territories”, a group of photographs focusing on the American state of Oklahoma, its convoluted histories and their present day manifestations.
